European Coalition of Cities Against Racism

Website

The European Coalition of Cities Against Racism is an initiative launched by UNESCO in March 2004.

It was proclaimed by joint declaration adopted on completion of the 4th European conference of cities for human rights which took place on 9th and 10th December 2004 in Nuremberg.

Its members include major cities such as Barcelona, London, Lyons, Nuremberg, Paris and Stockholm. These cities also belong to the steering committee set up in Nuremberg, alongside the Network of Italian Cities for Peace and Human Rights, the organisation of United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) and UNESCO.

It aims to establish a network of cities interested in exchanging feedback in order to improve their policies designed to combat racism, discrimination and xenophobia.

The action plan adopted by the Nuremberg meeting is made up of 10 commitments covering different areas of local expertise such as education, housing, employment or cultural activities. In particular, it puts forward a certain number of choices for initiatives that the local authorities can supplement and develop. The signatory cities commit to incorporating an action plan into their municipal strategies and policies.
