En plein air │05.05 > 15.08.2016

From 5th May to 15th August 2016

The theme of this opening exhibition, in collaboration with the Louvre, was chosen to illustrate the strong link between the museum and the surrounding park. The exhibition outlines, based on a chronological journey of about 100 works, the emergence and gradual development of painting "in the open air", from the 18th century to today, a practice that exactly coincided with the rise and the staging of new delights typical of the modern world: walking, leisure, stroll, vacation, ... Also described as painting "sur le motif" (to paint from nature, on the spot) this practice re ects the artist's desire to express his spontaneity, his freedom and the connexion he feels between himself and nature.

Works by famous painters, such as Monet, Cezanne, Matisse, Picasso and Léger, are witnesses of the profound in uence this movement had on the way painting was conceived. The exhibition "En Plein Air" is built around collections from more than 40 European and American institutions: Musée du Louvre, Museo del Prado, Dallas Museum, Musee de l'Orangerie,... and the collections of the Liège Museum of Fine Arts.
