Female patrons and donors par excellence

From 21 October 2022 to 26 February 2023, La Boverie museum is presenting its exhibition: ‘The Rothschild collectors: Female patrons and donors par excellence.’ Designed in partnership with The Louvre, it introduces visitors to the world of the Rothschild family, in particular, the collections of certain women from the French side of the family. Through this exhibition, La Boverie is inaugurating its theme for 2022–2023 – collections – and renewing its partnership with The Louvre, which began in 2016 (En plein air in 2016 and Viva Roma! in 2018)

Since the 19th century, the Rothschild family has been legendary in the history of our societies. Over time, this dynasty has become synonymous with success in the world of finance, but also with intellectual and artistic wealth. An essential name that is known by everyone. However, little-known personalities and an unexpected heritage lie behind this surname. This exhibition, which offers a fresh perspective, will highlight the women of the family with their unique personalities.

These women, who have been ignored throughout art history, were collectors, builders, patrons and heiresses and made significant contributions to the enrichment of the historical heritage and collections of French museums through considerable donations and inheritances. Over an itinerary of more than 2,000 m², the exhibition will retrace the tastes and personalities of nine exceptional women. Sometimes highly independent and sometimes in the shadow of their husbands, they played an important role in art history, history, society and even the lives of artists in their time.

Through a selection of over 350 works from around forty French institutions and private collections, the exhibition will offer an itinerary comprising works from all periods and all perspectives. Visitors will encounter great artists, such as Fragonard, Chardin, Delacroix, Cézanne, Claudel, Rodin and Egon Schiele, but also Italian Renaissance paintings, collections of jewels and porcelain and even works of art from Africa and the Far East. A huge number of artworks that testify to the history of tastes and collecting throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

Commission: Vincent Pomarède, Special Advisor for the Director of the Louvre Museum, Fanny Moens, Curator of the Museum of Fine Arts in the City of Liège (La Boverie museum) and Pauline Prevost Marcilhacy, a doctor of art history, lecturer at the University of Lille and specialist in the Rothschild family collections.
