As du Bellay wrote as early as the 16th century, the viatical experience leaves no one indifferent. Leaving one's place of origin for a certain period of time, abandoning one's landmarks, one's social identity, one's language, generates a decentring of oneself and directly impacts the traveller's artistic or literary practice.

In Italy, Paris or the Orient, artists take to the road on foot, on horseback, with whatever means they can find, depending on the period. The journey is often an integral part of the immersion. On the spot, the change of scenery stimulates artistic creation and leads to inspiration on new routes.

Through a selection of drawings and engravings from different periods, discover the different profiles of travelling artists and their destinations.
