Standing Committee for Euro-Mediterranean Partnership of the Local and Regional Authorities [COPPEM]

COPPEM (the Standing Committee for Euro-Mediterranean Partnership of the Local and Regional Authorities), is a network of Euro-Mediterranean Local Authorities and National Associations of Local Authorities, based in Palermo (Italy). It promotes both dialogue and cooperation for local development between towns, municipalities, Local Authorities and Regions of the member Countries of the Euro Mediterranean Partnership, and their active and concrete participation in achieving the objectives established within the Barcelona Declaration of 1995.

The Barcelona Declaration is the founding act of a global partnership between the European Union and the countries of the Southern Mediterranean. This partnership aims to make the Mediterranean a shared area for peace, stability and prosperity, thanks to reinforcing political dialogue and security, as well as economic, financial, social and cultural cooperation.

In light of the priorities for intervention defined by the COPPEM - namely political and institutional cooperation, cooperation between cities and regions, economic and financial cooperation, cooperation for equal opportunities, Human Rights and youth, cooperation on culture, new technology, tourism and the environment - and the interest of the City of Liège in these themes, at its session on 24th June 2013, the Municipal Council decided to join this network.

The City of Liège will take part in the works for the 4th commission concerning "Culture, the Environment, Tourism and New Technologies", which the city of Liège deems to be themes of promise.

Throughout this membership, the City of Liège and its multi-cultural character is re-asserting its international spirit as well its desire to be open to the world in general and especially to Mediterranean countries.
