Since 1955, this city has maintained special relations with Liège, as well as three other cities as part of the Meuse-Rhine Euro-region, referred to as the MAHHL cities (Maastricht, Aachen, Hasselt, Heerlen et Liège).
Description
Hasselt, "the capital of (good) taste", has a population of approximately 70,000. It is in the Flemish part of Belgium and is the administrative centre of the Limburg Province.
Hasselt, a former "Good City" of the County of Looz within the Prince-Bishopric of Liège, is today a city that boasts significant assets in scientific, economic and touristic terms. Visitors can stroll along its shopping streets or discover interesting sites such as the Japanese Garden, the Fashion Museum or the National Juniper Museum. It is also a student city which possesses three higher education institutes and a university.
