Lubumbashi [Democratic Republic of Congo]

Lubumbashi is the administrative centre of the Katanga Province. After the capital Kinshasa, it is the second biggest city in the Democratic Republic of Congo in terms of history, economic standing and population.

Founded in 1910 as a base for mining local resources, the city bears the nickname "the capital of copper". It is the second biggest industrial and commercial centre of the Democratic Republic of Congo and, as a result, is home to major Congolese companies (the Société nationale des chemins de fer du Congo rail company and Gécamines) as well as international industrial groups.

The city is administratively split into seven municipalities.

Liège and Lubumbashi

Twinned following the country's independence in 1961, the two cities actively cooperate, in particular in the fields of public records, the environment and cleanness.
