Contacts have been established since 2002 with this city of 2,250,000 inhabitants. Taiyuan boasts thirty cultural and historical State and province protected sites.

Notable examples are the Junci Temple, the twin pagodas of Lingxiao that have become the emblem of the city, the Taoist caverns of Mount Longshan as well as the no less famous Buddhist caverns of Mount Tianlong built during the Eastern Wei Dynasty (534 - 550).

In addition to these monuments, each year, the city attracts many visitors thanks to the landscapes around Lake Jinyang, as well as the Yunding and Jueshan Mountains located nearby. This industrial city has made the fight against pollution a priority.
